The Microsoft Office 2010 Blog

Posted on 14 May 2009 by officeadmin

Monday 11th May 2009 saw the birth of the Microsoft Office 2010 Blog. It’s being maintained by the Office team to help the general public get a better idea of what’s going into Office 2010 (formerly Office 14) and to discuss key issues. On the blog, and also at their annual TechEd event held in the US, Microsoft revealed  that attendees will make up the first segment of their limited Technical Preview program. Technical Previews are going to be released in July.

The blog cites the following as system requirements for running Office 2010:

1. Office 2010 will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

2. Office 2010 will run on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

3. You don’t need to replace hardware that is capable of running 2007, it will support Office 2010. Like Windows 7 has demonstrated, we realize that taking advantage of the hardware you already own is just as important as supporting all the new technology coming out.

I also checked out the Office 2010 Movie site and found that it was yet one more insidious attempt to get me to install Microsoft Silverlight. I finally caved in and installed it. The movie is nothing spectacular, and Silverlight itself didn’t offer anything that Flash could have offered for the same movie. One thing I found entertaining was the fact that the movie advertises “No Ctrl. Alt. Delete” as if it’s a feature and not something we should expect from software we are paying hard earned cash for. It’s supposed to work properly, this isn’t a lucky bonus!

In case you hadn’t got your name down, there is a registration page to indicate your desire to be put on the waiting list for the Office 2010 Technical Preview.

Get this – there’s also a Microsoft Office 2010 Forum now. From looking at the threads there it looks like this forum was born this week. At the time of writing, the most active thread is discussing the facility to turn off the ribbon and return to 2003 style menus!

I have been using Microsoft Office products since Word 5 for DOS and have always been able to use these products with ease. What use to take me about 2 minutes to accomplish in previous versions, now takes me between 20 and 30 minutes with Office 2007 or 2010. Have you people lost you direction completely? The whole of Microsoft seems to be busy making things more and more difficult for the customers. This is such a ratical change that people will need to start their learning curve all over again. The old menu structure made since and was easy to find the features used on a daily basis. This thing is beyond being too busy It is nothing short of a nightmare for someone who has been using older Microsoft products for this long. An the problem goes deeper than Office. I have held many Novell Netware certifications and I have had many people tell me over the years that I just need to give up the command line. Well I did just that over the years and now that I am managing Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, I find that I am being forced back to a command line. Has all of Microsoft gone mad? For people who have been using Microsoft products all these years to make this big of a change is like asking them to start using Linux servers and desktops. In either case it is a huge learning curve, but with one path, it’s unlikely we would need to make such a drastic change in the future. So are you trying to drive people to Linux? If so it’s working. My company has asked me to become Linux certified because they are loosing faith in Microsoft. Please pass this on to your top level management. My wish for Microsoft is that they get their direction back soon before it’s too late.

    Thanks,

    David Smith

I installed office 2010 a couple of days ago and uninstalled it today. I cannot go days without emails. Looked online for a solution to the fact that my emails were not being stored in outlook. Did the F1 help thing. Bought a book. Sick of Microsoft putting software on the market with bugs. Microsoft has no competition that is the problem!

I think it’s important that Microsoft hear concerns that their customers have. Keep it coming!

    Hi David

You find the old menu structure easy to use because you are familiar with it. You learnt how to use it.

I hated the ribbon when it was introduced, but after using it most days, I’m now familiar with it and find it easy to use.

If you spend time becoming familiar with the ribbon, you will very soon find it easy to use.

    Your choice, of course :)
