Two months after the Microsoft Office 2010 technical preview was leaked onto the web , Microsoft are scheduled to announce their Office Web Applications and the Office 2010 beta. Even though the beta will be officially released later this month, I'm sure that a great portion of the public are already trialling the beta courtesy of the numerous torrent sites providing downloads to it. At the Professional Developers Conference 2008, it was revealed that Microsoft Office 14 for the web will run on operating systems other than Windows. This, of course, includes the Mac and Linux based operating systems.

Contrary to the earlier circulation of rumours that Silverlight is absolutely necessary to run Office 14 for the web, this QA by Sarah Perez on the Microsoft Office Web Applications blog says otherwise. It had previously been reported that Silverlight was needed to ascertain the identities of fonts installed on the user’s system.
