Office Web Apps

Office Web Apps

Have you seen the new Office Web Apps yet? They look remarkably like their desktop counterparts, albeit with reduced functionality. The similarity is uncanny, nevertheless. There are web based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and One Note, and to use them, you'll need a Windows Live profile. [...more]

Microsoft Office Tutorials

Microsoft Office Tutorials

Well, I've gone and bought a new domain to house Microsoft Office Tutorials. It doesn't look much at the moment, but it's early days yet, and very much a work in progress. I only took ownership of this domain this morning, and there was no site on it, so I have a clean slate to work with. There's just some placeholder text there to help me design the layout of the site, and the only thing that gives away its purpose is teh Microsoft Office Tutorials heading. [...more]

Windows Skydrive

Windows Skydrive

Windows Live Skydrive provides users (you and me) with 25Gb of online storage - free. It's basically a resource that allows you to store, access, and share your files online with friends or co-workers, from anywhere. It's a secure space (it's password protected) and many people use it as a means to share large photos, files, and documents. You decide who sees your files. [...more]

Microsoft Office 2010 Beta

Microsoft Office 2010 Beta

Well nobody told me that the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta was available! I downloaded the technical preview for Office 2010 in August and since then I've been using it every day. The only thing out of the ordinary I'd noticed with the technical preview was that it was very slow to open existing documents. [...more]

These new PCs will be bought with a product key card that will enable customers to "unlock" their suite of Office programs. SharePoint Grooving: SharePoint Workspace 2010

SharePoint Grooving: SharePoint Workspace 2010

Did you even know that Office 2007 included Groove? The odds are those who did and came around to even using the app are not too numerous. With Office 2010, Microsoft has at last turned to the Office dark horse, a newcomer acquired with Groove Networks and, most importantly, Ray Ozzie, the creator of Groove and Lotus Notes, and now aspires to leverage the peer-to-peer collaboration tool in SharePoint. The big news in the domaining market is the recent acquisition made by Microsoft of the office.com domain. Microsoft Word $300M Patent Case

Microsoft Word $300M Patent Case

U.S. District Court Judge Leonard Davis has ordered Microsoft to pay nearly $300M in damages and interest to Canadian company i4i. i4i has a patent for a document system that relies on XML (extensible markup language) custom formatting and Microsoft infringed it when they started selling versions of Word from 2007 onwards. Microsoft famously introduced the XML file formats in Word 2007 (the 'x' in the .docx file extension stands for XML). [...more]

Invitation From Microsoft Connect

Invitation From Microsoft Connect

I feel like Willy Wonka when he got his golden ticket. Finally, I received my invitation from Microsoft Connect to download the Office 2010 Technical Preview. Previously I'd been using the leaked version that my grandmother had downloaded from some torrent site or other, but now I can use a legitimate copy. The big bonus of receiving the official invite is that it gives you access to documentation that explains what's new in Office 2010. [...more]
