Microsoft Office 2010 is the next version of the Microsoft Office suite and is scheduled for release some time in 2009. Microsoft started development on this version of Office in 2006, while they were still finishing off Office 2007. Version 13 has been skipped for superstious reasons, so Office 14 was originally penned in as the name! Soon after, it was confirmed that Office 2010 is indeed the name of the next Office suite.
Initially pegged for release in the first half of 2009, current information now suggests a date as late as early 2010. This will coincide with the Windows 7 (Windows Vienna) release.
It is envisaged that Microsoft Office 2010 will implement the ISO compliant version of Open XML (standardized as ISO 29500 in March 2008).
Good news for Microsoft Office Visio and Microsoft Office Project users is that these two applications will both feature the Ribbon in their graphical user interface, as is already the case in most of the other 2007 applications.
Update – September 2009: We are definitely looking at some time in 2010 for a release date. Meanwhile, the Technical Preview of Office 2010 is available and beta testers are testing it as we speak.
